KOYORI to Debut Five Japanese-Styled Chairs at Milan Furniture Fair

KOYORI is a new Japanese design brand all set to debut its first collection of five chairs during the Milan Design Week in June 2022. These chairs represent a distinctive class of Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetics.

Built together with Japan’s leading furniture and interior décor manufacturers, the KOYORI brand is formed under the guidance of English designer Jasper Morrison and Swiss graphic designer Sebastian Fehr.

The name ‘KOYORI’ is derived from a Japanese expression for ‘twisted paper cords’ which is the primary material of Mizuhiki, the durable and decorative paper strings traditionally used in Japan for wrapping gifts.

The company’s preview at Salone 2022 comprises five chairs: Kawara Armchair, Musubi Armchair, and Shaku Chair by Paris-based brothers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and Miau Armchair and Edaha Chair designed by Danish-Italian design duo GamFratesi.

Designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec explained that their goal with the KOYORI project was to invent something new, while at the same time emphasizing o the quality and specific technical expertise of the manufacturers.

Executive Director, Koda Munetoshi at KOYORI defined, “While the simplicity and subtle beauty of Japanese products radiate Japanese aesthetics, these are actually a result of the diligence, passion, and devotion of the craftsmen. Design enthusiasts will appreciate the perfectionism, commitment, and thoughtfulness in the KOYORI range that together render every product unique.”

Crafted using Japanese manufacturing technology, all KOYORI products are made to last longer and offer happiness to owners.

Kawara Armchair

The Kawara wooden armchair features classic and simple lines along with three-dimensionally curved backrest and armrest in plywood. The soft curves add to the aesthetic appeal of the chair while also contributing to the chair’s strength, stability, and sitting comfort.

Ronan Bouroullec said “For the Kawara Armchair, we wanted to design a large box-like dining chair, which gives the comfort of sitting in a very soft shell. We imagine this charming chair around a dining or meeting table, and it is available in different colors, upholstered in leather or textile.”

Musubi Armchair

The Musubi Armchair design emphasizes the beautifully yet efficiently sculptured parts of wood. The backrest, arms, and seat appear as if they are assembled as one. The backrest and armrest have achieved a sculptural three-dimensional shape by carving out solid wood using both wood-bending and 5-axis NC cutting techniques.

The Shaku Chair

The Shaku Chair is a warm, beautiful, and simple furniture piece with a relatively high back that makes it comfortable to sit on despite the relatively small size. Owing to the high processing accuracy, the seat base of the chair appears as if it is holding the backrest. Furthermore, the curved seat and backrest snuggle up the body for optimal sitting comfort.

Miau Armchair

The Miau Armchair can be considered a reinterpretation of Danish traditions and design. Its armrests and backrest are made of single bentwood that creates a uniform, beautiful and durable structure.

Talking about the chair, GamFratesi said, “With the Miau Armchair, we wanted to create a humanly warm and gentle design with a feline motif. Hence the series of minute details, particularly the armrest that invites you to be caressed and discover the beauty of this material.”

Edaha Chair

After looking at the shape of Edaha Chair, it is quite apparent that nature is a source of inspiration behind its design. The branch-like structure and leaf-shaped veneer set are the main elements of the chair. The aim was to create a structure that gently supported the suspended seat just like a leaf on a branch.
